Here are a few fast fun facts that we've rounded up about Beautiful Lake Chelan:

  • The Native Americans who first inhabited the Lake Chelan Valley were called the “Tsillan,” later spelled Chelan, meaning ‘deep water’.
  • Lake Chelan is 52 miles long and only 1 mile wide at its widest.
  • Lake Chelan is the third deepest lake in the U.S. At its greatest depth (1,486) it’s 386 feet below sea level.
  • The lake was formed by glaciers millions of years ago.
  • In the 1880's, mines popped up in the upper areas of Lake Chelan for mining precious metals such as; gold, silver, copper, zinc, and lead. Holden Village was an area once mined for ore.
  • More than 2 million visitors come to visit Lake Chelan every year!
  • Chelan has roughly 10,000+ acres devoted to growing apples and other fruits.
  • Apples are the largest crop in the Valley, but we also have a fair share of cherries, pears, apricots, peaches and wine grapes that are also produced.
  • There are more than 30+ wineries, and growing!
